The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream
months ago and was hesitant to do
a review since then. The reason being I really didn’t know how to start, would I be able to give a fair review, would I be able to provide a good look without giving too much of the story, so many questions and very few answers...
Eventually, I caved in and on this beautiful early morning of August 2016 with a nice cup of espresso I trusted my inner self just like what Paulo would have us do and without any idea of what I am going to write, went for it.
The book blew my mind. I wasn’t avid reader/listener of
novels. In fact, the novels I went through since my childhood are numbered. I
still like to read and write poetry but novels weren’t my thing… until this came
along.
The book is as famous as it can be, translated to 56
languages and selling more than 65 million copies, it even set a record in Guinness
World Record for most translated book by a living author.
Without giving too much details, the story starts and ends
in a loop. I recommend you go through it at least twice. It is full of wisdom
and mystery points that you simply won’t catch everything that is going on for
the first time.
.
Paulo, known for his amazing writing style didn’t fall short
here either. The book is written in a smooth silky way that you can barely let
go once you start. The characters are laid out profoundly well, the
conversations bring you back and forth, from reality to dream land without
hesitations.
.
The journey starts and end with a boy shepherd named“Santiago” in pursing his ultimate dream. This journey leads him to travel many places, change continent, leave his family,
leave a love, leave his sheep and his belonging all for the freedom of knowing
there is more to take on life than to sit and wait in a stagnant state.
.
The result ended in an amazing way for the boy, but the
point here is that if it didn’t end it would still have been worth it. We all
need to look at our lives and ask the question, are you ready to leave from
this earth doing what we do now? Are we really satisfied that this is the end
for us? Or there are still more opportunities, more discoveries, more dreams,
more challenges and more love?
.
I wouldn’t dare to leave this review without the mention of
the amazing story telling that
.
